Brush Up Your Shrimpspeare - shrimp skewers with basil butter inspired by the musical Kiss Me, Kate!

For our fourth recipe inspired by Kiss Me, Kate (the others being Too Darn Hot, Wunderbark and of course Crisp Me, Kale), today we present, Brush Up Your Shrimpspeare!

The song Brush Up Your Shakespeare is sung by the two gangsters, who unexpectedly get caught on stage and improvise a song.

Brush up your Shakespeare
Start quoting him now
Brush up your Shakespeare
And the women you will wow

The song is unusual because it appears that there is no recording of it made by Frank Sinatra. Luckily we always have the Muppet version to fall back on – although disappointingly I can’t find a video! But this pun-filled song is usually the main comedy number of Act II, where the gangsters demonstrate ways that they would use Shakespeare to impress women…

Just declaim a few lines from ‘Othella’
And they think you’re a heckuva fella
If your blond won’t respond when you flatter ‘er
Tell her what Tony told Cleopaterer

So if Cole Porter can make fun of the names of Shakespeare’s plays and get away with it, I’ll poke fun at Shakespeare’s name by turning it into Shrimpspeare.

Recipe directions:

  1. Spear a shrimp.
  2. Brush it.
  3. Cook it.
  4. Eat it.

OK, OK, I’ll give a little more detail. Soak wooden skewers in water for at least an hour. Thread raw shrimp onto the skewers. Mix together melted butter, garlic paste, salt, pepper, and finely chopped basil. Basil may seem like an unusual choice with shrimp but it works really well and is a nod to the Italian themes of Kiss Me, Kate.

Brush the butter mixture over the shrimp. I used a silicone brush.

Cook on a grill or grill pan until the shrimp is cooked through. If you like, brush them again with any remaining butter mixture before serving!
