Released in 1942, Holiday Inn is the classic Christmas musical film starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. Irving Berlin wrote twelve songs specifically for the film, the best known being “White Christmas” which received the 1943 Academy Award for Best Original Song. The film also received Oscar nominations for Best Score and Best Original Story. The plot and songs of the film have recently been reworked for the stage as Holiday Inn, The New Irving Berlin Musical, currently wowing audiences on Broadway. A West End production is planned under the working title of Travelodge.
The show tells the story of Jim, who leaves the bright lights of show business behind to settle down on his farmhouse in Connecticut. He quickly discovers life isn’t the same without a bit of song and dance. Jim’s luck takes a spectacular turn when he meets Linda, a spirited schoolteacher with talent to spare. Together they turn the farmhouse into a fabulous inn with dazzling performances to celebrate each holiday, from Thanksgiving to the Fourth of July. But when Jim’s best friend Ted tries to lure Linda away to be his new dance partner in Hollywood, will Jim be able to salvage his latest chance at love?
This is a festive twist on a classic sloe gin fizz. You will need some cranberry syrup for this recipe, which is made by boiling down store-bought cranberry juice until you have a quarter to a fifth of the volume left – don’t let it get too thick. This can live in your fridge quite happily for a few days until you need it (try using it in our posset recipe too). If possible, use chilled ingredients.
To a chilled cocktail shaker, add 2 measures of sloe gin, 1 measure of cranberry syrup and a pinch of pumpkin spice – stir and give it a quick taste; add a squeeze of lime if you would like your cocktail a little sharper (or adjust the amount of gin/syrup/spice to suit your taste).
Note for U.K. readers: pumpkin spice is a US spice/blend that contains nothing pumpkin-related, but is a mix of cinnamon, allspice, clove and nutmeg. A tiny pinch of each (or at the very least, some cinnamon) will work just fine in this recipe.
Add an egg white and some ice-cubes and shake vigorously for a good minute. Strain the cocktail into your serving glass and top up with club soda – the bubbles in the soda combined with the egg white should produce a picturesque frothy head to your cocktail. Enjoy with some chestnuts roasting on an open fire…
