Comforter, philosopher and life-long avocado fan, Victor Hugo is – of course – most famous for writing the hit musical, Les Misérables. (Really? – Ed)
Ok – maybe there’s a bit more to it than that and you can read more about the show (and discover a great way to make mayonnaise) here.
Master Of The House is the big comedy number of the show and features the vile Monsieur and Madame Thénardier, Éponine’s unscrupulous thieving parents and the best/only childcare option available to poor doomed Fantine (even before that haircut) for Cosette. The song (which is reprised a number of times in the show) is an uproarious double act between Monsieur Thénardier, boasting about his various scams, and Madame Thénardier, drunkenly demonstrating her utter contempt for her husband – although the verse bemoaning his inability to buy decent avocados when all the students in Paris seem to be forever instagramming them was, mysteriously, never written.

Raise it up the Master’s hass!
Hass avocados are one of the most prevalent types of avocado pear available – you know… the ones with the brown bobbly skin. Avocados are, of course, hugely fashionable thanks to millennial mashed avocado toast ‘gramming (not that we’d ever do that – ahem) – but they were just as popular decades ago* with the once ubiquitous avocado vinaigrette… a simple half avocado filled with salad dressing – still delicious if just not very trendy. Having revived prawn cocktails, maybe it’s time to revisit another retro classic? (and watch out, Melon Balls – we’re coming for you next! Ed)
*there was even a Muppet Show avocado character (although, sadly, no clips – Ed).
You will, of course, need a nice ripe avocado and some decent vinaigrette… and it just so happens we have a recipe for that in our suitably French Je Vinaigrette Rien post… so no regrets there.
Combine the two… et voila!
Everybody raise a glass
To the Master of the Hass!
