Offer your guests a Cabaret-themed appetizer with this delicious recipe: Mein Herring!

Mein Herr is from the fantastic Kander & Ebb musical Cabaret, after which this site is named! It opened on Broadway in 1966 and and was released as a successful movie starring Liza Minnelli in 1972. The musical is set in 1931 Berlin in a nightclub called the Kit Kat Klub, and features musical numbers that are both part of the nightclub performance as well as behind the scenes. Mein Herr is sung by the female lead, Sally Bowles, and is a sassy song about not being attached to any particular man.
I’ve actually been to Berlin. And I actually enjoyed a platter of different kinds of marinated herring while I was there. So I feel completely justifying in celebrating my love of the song AND the musical, with this appetizer dish: “Mein Herring”.
Jars of herring are often available in the seafood section of grocery stores – and usually come in either a cream or white wine sauce (at least here in the US, that’s the case!). For this recipe you’ll need the white wine option.
Mix together sour cream and creamed horseradish. Taste for seasoning and add salt and black pepper to suit your palate.
Lay out the crackers (I used thin rice crackers) and spoon some of the sour cream mixture onto each cracker. Drain the jar of herrings and cut into bite-sized pieces if necessary. Place a piece of herring on top of each cracker and finish with chopped chives.
- 20 crackers
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1 tsp creamed horseradish (or to taste)
- salt and black pepper
- 12 oz herrings in white wine sauce, drained
- chopped fresh chives
- Mix together the sour cream and horseradish, and add salt and pepper if desired.
- Spoon the cream onto each cracker, and the top with a piece of herring.
- Garnish with chives.
