All you wanna do is ride around erm… salad.

I have very fond memories of The Commitments, the 1991 Alan Parker film based on the Roddy Doyle novel, as (in my teens) it was sanctioned for school-time viewing during music lessons – the vast amount of creative swearing alone made a deep impression, second only to the great soul soundtrack (there can’t be too many Brits my age who never owned a copy of that CD). The film tells of the rise (and fall) of a soul band set up by a group of young working-class Dubliners who allow petty arguments and jealousies to rip them apart [SPOILERS] just as success is in their grasp. Mustang Sally is the signature song of the film as it appears in numerous scenes as the band rehearse and perform over the course of the film, although I never really understood the lyric about wiping her wee behind.
I’m gonna be wiping your weeping eyes.
That there is a stage version of The Commitments comes as little surprise, although it took until 2013 to open in London (to mixed reviews) and is still touring the UK today.
I’m not sure if this really qualifies as a recipe – it’s a salad… you just chuck it together depending on the quantities you have to hand… My avocado was HUGE, so I only used half – whereas the mango was small, so I used all of it (by the way… you have to try this method of peeling a mango!) I realise that I use pomegranate molasses to the point of self-parody (what can I say, I bought a bottle and want to use it up!) but it really is great here, adding a nice sweet-and-sour tang (and this salad MUST tang – it’s in the name!) A balsamic glaze or even some sweet chilli sauce would also work fine.
Slice up the avocado and mango and arrange on a plate. Add some sliced red onion, red chilli, torn cilantro/coriander leaf and, if liked, some torn buffalo mozzarella. Squeeze over the juice of half a lime, season with salt and pepper and add a drizzle of pomegranate molasses. Then, all you’ve got to do is ride around the salad!
