Guys & Dolls is fast becoming our most punned-up musical on this blog. I’m not sure whether it’s because it was the first show that all three editors were in together, or perhaps the songs just lend themselves to being punnified. Probably both! Our latest recipe is based on the song Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat, sung by Nicely Nicely Johnson.

Boat = Goat? We couldn’t let that go by without a recipe.

But I’m afraid that I wimped out of cooking actual goat for this recipe. The damn thing just wouldn’t stay still long enough. So, we have goat’s cheese. As recipes go it’s a very simple one, but the fun is in the coatings for the cheesy balls. And yes, I did just write that.

Place the goat’s cheese in a bowl (I used about 4oz in the photo shown), grind over some black pepper and mash it together with a fork to soften and season it.

Prepare the coatings – I used toasted sesame seeds (I toasted my own but you COULD buy them ready toasted – who knew?!?), paprika, Italian seasoning, and poppy seeds. Form the goat’s cheese into small balls then roll them in the coatings. Place them on a serving tray (a boat shaped dish is a particularly fine idea, if you ask me) and keep in the fridge until required. Serve with crackers or crusty bread.Sit Down You're Rocking The Goat - a goat's cheese appetizer inspired by the musical Guys & Dolls!

The sesame seed version was definitely my favorite. The paprika was a little too strong but actually a great combination. Other possible coatings include:

  • crushed fennel seeds
  • cracked black pepper
  • finely chopped fresh rosemary
  • crushed pink peppercorns
  • finely chopped pimento
  • finely chopped fresh rosemary
