Like Get Me To The Chicken On Thyme, (our only other recipe from My Fair Lady so far), the song With A Little Bit of Luck is sung by the character Alfred P. Doolittle, Eliza’s father. The role was played by Stanley Holloway in both the original stage production and also the 1964 movie. Sung in a cheery Cockney accent, the song is about avoiding responsibility and taking the easy way out in different life situations.

The Lord above made liquor for temptation
To see if man could turn away from sin
The Lord above made liquor for temptation
But, with a little bit of luck, with a little bit of luck
When temptation comes you’ll give right in

Ah yes, temptation. Ever since my co-editor Keith made Duck Be A Lady (Tonight) I’ve been craving pan-fried duck breast. But where I live it isn’t particularly easy to buy – and when I find it, it isn’t cheap. So this has been a long time coming – and it was worth it!

I followed the instructions in his recipe precisely, and the duck was perfect. I served it over a mixed salad of butter lettuce, grape tomatoes, raw green beans and finely chopped green onions. I didn’t serve a dressing with it because the duck was so tender and flavorful. But if you wanted a dressing for the salad, something with balsamic would work well – or even a fruity vinaigrette with raspberries or blackberries.

This recipe would work well as an appetizer or light lunch – just make sure you only serve a little bit of duck to each person… 🙂
